The issues of biodiversity are intertwined with the threats to cultural diversity. Each place has a different environment and that environment shapes our views, language, and beliefs. In other words our culture is shaped. A place can have thousands of years worth of a culture’s history. However, when that place is exploited for land or resources the culture is damaged. I believe that governments should be actively involved through legislation and funding in protecting diversity because diversity helps widens man’s views and allows for progress.
The biodiversity has been in decline due to deforestation, development of housing, mining, pollution, etc. When people go to harvest resources they push out smaller cultures and threaten them. The other problem is people trying to force smaller cultures to merge in with the dominate culture. An example of this is when the dominate cultures language is learned and used until the smaller cultures language ceases to exist. I don’t think that everyone should speak one language because then we lose the different ways of thinking and seeing the world. Someone who was raised to believe that the forests are sacred will have a different outlook on life then one who thinks the forests are there to be cut down and use for housing. I think different cultures need to be protected and the government should step in through legislation and funding. In Australia there are many cultures but the government has helped everyone get along. The government has offered grants to organizations and communities that advocate and promote inclusive practices and tolerance of different cultures. The government has also tried to help migrants and refugees fully participate in their community through settlement services. This way different cultures can learn about the new culture they are living in, but can still hold on to their beliefs.
Now it may be argued that getting the government involved can lead to discrimination of a certain culture or lead to the government trying to get everyone to conform to the dominate culture. However, if the goal is tolerance and the idea is to go in and learn from one another then this will not happen. If the different cultures are involved then they can act as a regulator to make sure that the government is promoting tolerance and acceptance.
